The Illinois Council for the Social Studies (ICSS) holds two conferences annually - spring and fall. The spring conferences are traditionally held downstate while the fall conferences are traditionally held in the Chicagoland area. Both conferences offer a wide selection of presentations to choose from. A highlight of each conference is a luncheon with a keynote speaker well-known in the social studies field. Vendors and various other social studies organizations are present at exhibit tables.
These conferences have several purposes. The conferences provide a forum for college faculty to present their research on social studies education. They also provide an opportunity for pre-service and in-service teachers to showcase innovative social studies teaching methods. Attendees can meet representatives from various social studies organizations and vendors. Finally, the conferences enable educators of all levels to interact and exchange ideas about the teaching of social studies.
