Fall 2022 Conference Highlights
The Fall 2022 ICSS Conference was held at Harper College, Palatine Illinois on Friday, October 14.
Responding to the societal dialogue regarding the nature of history, the role of stakeholders in curriculum interpretation, ever-changing mandates and standards, and the positioning of teachers in the social studies classroom, this conference provided opportunity for professional dialogue, growth, and networking.
The ICSS Fall Conference engaged over 100 practicing PK-12 social studies teachers, preservice teachers, university faculty, social studies researchers, and concerned citizens. Participants explored a variety of topics and sessions that are pertinent to social studies students and teachers in the field across grade levels and social studies content areas.
This year’s conference theme was: “Social Studies at the Forefront of Public Discourse”. With the focus on providing practical experiences for classroom teachers, presenters brought to the conference innovative teaching methods, successful lesson plans, useful resources, and other sessions that challenged teachers to explore new pedagogies or lines of thinking and sessions that highlighted historically marginalized voices or perspectives.
The Fall 2022 Conference Keynote Speaker was Mary Ellen Daneels a National Board Certified teacher who taught at West Chicago Community High School for 27 years. She serves as the Director of the Illinois Civics Hub and Illinois Democracy School Network, leading efforts to support the implementation of the middle and high school civics course requirements and Illinois social science standards.
Mary Ellen has been recognized as the Law-related Educator of the Year from the Constitutional Rights Foundation of Chicago, Teacher of the Year by the 19th District of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Civic Education Teacher from the Center for Civic Education and the Illinois Education Association Teacher of the Year. Mary Ellen has presented on the proven practices of civic learning throughout the nation. She has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning and highlighted in numerous publications such as Education Week, Social Education, and Educational Leadership.
Mary Ellen has advocated for civic education before federal and state lawmakers. She served on the Board of Directors for the National Council of the Social Studies and worked on both the Steering Committee and Pedagogy Committee for the Educating for American Democracy Roadmap.
With all that is happening in the world of social studies education, it is imperative to remain connected and to engage in dialogue. ICSS hopes to see you at our Spring 2023 Conference! Check the website for more details.
